Antequera Basket

Antequera is the basket capital of Bohol. Baskets ranging from the smallest to the biggest can be found and woven freely by locals who have been into the industry for years. The basket weaving industry in the municipality is the main source of income for most of its residents. The enterprises involved in the craft are mostly home based units. To date, there are a total of three (3) established firms in the industry who are supported by approximately 10,000 weavers from the municipality. Raw materials being used include wicker, bamboo, rattan, buri, nito, sig-id and other vines.

The Antequera basket weaving industry dates back to the early 1900s with the skills of the craft being handed down from generation to generation. As the basket capital of Bohol, the municipality is better known in the province as a craft village where children as young as 5 years old learn the intricacies of the craft from their parents and from adults. Over the years, the residents of Antequera have learned to weave even during their pastime--- while watching television and listening to radio. There is no common production center where they work together, rather weaving is done in their homes.
